JJ Abrahm’s Cloverfield - New York City Destroyed Again

Cloverfield is the title of the new JJ Abrams (Armageddon , Alias, Lost , Felicity ) film which has been shrouded in a mysterious viral marketing campaign.

From the trailers (see below), some monster is wreaking havoc in NYC Godzilla-style, with the story told in a first-person video perspective, ala The Blair Witch Project et al.

From the trailer, it is intriguing mostly because of its first-person perspective, but when you take a step back, its like ‘how is this going to be different from a Godzilla movie, apart from the perspective?

My apprehension is largely based with my experience from other JJ Abrams adventures. We certainly don’t need another Armageddon, Jennifer Garner pretty much carried the implausible plots of Alias much as Keri Russell did for Felicity.

And don’t get me started on Lost - it was halfway through the second season when I realized that the story could not possibly have an intelligent conclusion (which has been admitted to by writers on the show).

So, yes, I am completely convinced that JJ Abrahms can present a fun sci-fi adventure romp, and I like the first-person twist so far, but I am fully ready to be dissapointed and/or feel jerked around by the plot by at least midway through the movie. We’ll see next Friday.
