Don’t Buy an Asus Eee PC Just Yet!

OK, so the Asus Eee PC has really taken the market by storm. Its a tiny 2-lb notebook computer that runs a friendly version of the Linux operating system (it can also run Windows but doesn’t come with it pre-installed). Plus, you can get one for as little as $299.

Now, there aren’t a lot of 2 lb notebooks on the market – nor are there a lot of $299 notebooks. So, I can understand the appeal of the Eee PC, especially for people who are highly mobile and just need to do a bit more surfing and email then they would prefer to do on a Blackberry.

From what I understand, the things are selling like hotcakes. But before you take a dip with one of the few notebooks that are small enough to be usable in a New Haven Line Metro-North seat, there are some things you should know:

  1. Its got a tiny 7″ screen, and more importantly a small resolution of 800×480.
  2. It has no cellular modem capability (although someone has hacked specific models with an HSDPA card).
  3. It only has between 2-8GB of storage depending on the model.

However, Everex and Walmart have teamed up to bring us the CloudBook, a notebook which takes the Eee PC head-on, matching its specs but adding a 30 GB hard drive, larger screen (same resolution though), faster processor and longer battery life for $399.

Supposedly launching January 25th only at Walmart, so hold on to that cash just a little longer…
