ScanCT.com - A Great Resource In Case of Emergency

I have a confession to make - back in the day, I used to be a scanner nut. No, not the scanners we use now to get old snapshots into our computer, but the kind that allow you to listen to police and radio calls.

It didn’t last long, but since I have moved to SouthEastern Connecticut we have had our fair share of storms and associated power outages, and when stuff like this happens I always wish I could tune in to whats going on.

Well, thanks to the internet, you don’t really need to know all the geek stuff - the hardware, frequencies, and antennas and nonsense associated with scanning - you can just listen in with your computer.

Luckily, one of the best sites for scanning-over-the-web is targeted to our region - ScanCT.com. Just visit their home page, and select one of the regions on the left, and you will be listening to a scanner monitoring the emergency frequencies for that region.

At first listen, you might be a little confused as, depending on the region, you may hear nothing, since the feed is largely silence. Be patient, leave it on in the background, and you will be hearing calls in no time.

I used the Darien feed recently to try to find up what was up with the Norwalk station service, and soon learned it was likely a suicide unfortunately, which was confirmed later by the Stamford Advocate website.
