So, I was starting to do a lot of research into character actors last night to decide who should play Eliot Spitzer in the inevitable Lifetime TV Original Movie depicting the betrayal of his wife.
I quickly realized it was no contest - the role of Eliot Spitzer must be played by Christopher Meloni, who plays Detective Elliot Stabler on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
In fact, it started to get spooky - like Lincoln-Kennedy spooky…
Lets take a look at the facts:
- Meloni’s SVU character is named ‘Elliot S.’
- Stabler is a New York government employee
- Stabler is adamant about enforcing lawful, ethical behavior but ironically has his own moral lapses
- Stabler works extensively with the Manhattan District Attorney, a position Spitzer formerly held
- Stabler is deeply involved in sexually-related offenses
- Meloni looks like Spitzer if he stopped bodybuilding every part of his body - except his ears
- Stabler’s character arc saw him married and then divorced
- Meloni has extensive experience starring in stories which are ‘ripped from the headlines‘
- Meloni is 46, perfect to play the character age arc of 48-year-old Spitzer’s rise and fall
- Meloni is attractive and charismatic enough to make the loving marital relationship and its betrayal believable, relatable, and emotionally traumatic to female viewers, which is the goal of all Lifetime Original Movies

As a side note from my research, I do not suggest doing a search for ‘Chris Meloni’ on Google (at least not without SafeSearch on ’strict’!)
If you did happen to do this, here is my obligatory Mariska Hargitay chaser:

excellent, of course. i’m wondering who’s going to play him in law and order, though. or who’s going to do what he did… and when it will run. i’d think it would be in the next two weeks, as excited as law and order gets about these things. ripped from the headlines!

Thats a good question.
I just re-reviewed the actors I was looking at, and I am going to say James Denton, Teri Hatchers BF on Desperate Housewives.
Its doing Spitzer a HUGE favor looks-wise, but it will sizzle it up. Have you seen the pictures of the hooker? She should play herself - that would be an episode not to be missed.
