Cottenelle Subway Ad Campaign Riles Environmentalists

A week ago in my freakishly long manifesto on NYC public restrooms, I gave props to the Cottonelle company for their new subway campaign, which I find appealing and ingenius.

Kleercut Protesters In NYC Rally Against Cottonelle Ad Campaign

“I really admire the Cottonelle subway ad campaign, mostly because the ribbed texture give the cars a nice clean, cozy feel, which I am certain is what was totally intended. Oh, and the little puppy reminds me of my dog. The eyebrow-raising ad copy also gets people talking - and blogging - about their ads. Kimberly-Clark says it’s the the largest non-traditional ad campaign in history.”Cottonelle Bus Stop Ad

I know that reads kind of silly, but its true - the graphics of the campaign are cozy and cuddly, and the copy is edgy and uncomfortable in a way that gets people thinking about it. Good Ad work, for what it’s worth.

There is an organization, however, which isn’t a fan of Cottonelle, and they call themselves Kleercut.

Cottonelle Dog BusAccording to a recent story on their website, “New York City Commuters have expressed disgust” over Cottonelle’s ‘creepy dog-bus’ as well as the copy of the new subway campaign.

While they may seem a little prissy in their analysis of the ads, its probably because of Kleercut’s claims that Cottenelle maker Kimberly-Clark’s destroys ‘ancient forests’ to manufacture their products.

While admitting that competing big-name manufacturers such as Proctor and Gamble are also culprits, they explain that their focus on Kimberly-Clark is due to the sheer size of the company and its offenses. By focusing on KC, they explain, they can get them to take action, and the rest of the industry will likely follow suit.

But don’t worry, you don’t need to become a treehugger and wipe your bum with leaves and berries in order to help save the ancient forests - Kleercut has a list of environmentally-friendly alternative brands with equally bum-friendly brand names such as ‘Basic For Less’ and ‘Econochoice’ - mmmm, sounds comfy!
