TVSquad.com has a list of 15 great New York City TV Shows.
I have to disagree with their choice of Spin City however (and most NYC sitcoms on the list actually) - Spin City was an outstanding sitcom, but it could have been set in a fictional city and the sexy office humor would been just as effective. It wasn’t a great NYC TV show, it was a great TV show which was set in NYC.
One exception I would have to make is Seinfeld. Yes it was entirely shot on sets and I cannot think of any location shooting of significance, but any New Yorker would immediately recognize the lifestyle and whining as deliberate and authentic.
When I think of great New York City TV shows, I think of Law and Order (SVU, Criminal Intent and Sex In The City. These are shows which not only deal deeply with New York themes and lifestyles, but they also undertake the daunting challenge and expense of dragging their crew out into Manhattan virtually every single episode.
I never knew that the Dick Van Dyke Show had him living in New Rochelle - I guess he was a Metro-North New Haven Line commuter!
