Connecticut State Police Stop All Traffic On I-95 Southbound In Norwalk Behind Costco

Above: This cellphone photo submitted by a StationStops reader shows police having completely stopped traffic on I-95 Southbound behind Costco on the Norwalk-Darien line at 6 PM. The black truck behind the cruiser to the right matches the description of the suspects vehicle.

On Sunday afternoon, the Connecticut State police attempted to pull over a black Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck on I-95 southbound. A high-speed pursuit ensued, which was concluded when a passenger in the vehicle shot himself in the head with a shotgun [WTNH Video].

The passenger, Eric Niles, 19, was in the truck being driven by Kristen Cates, 18, of Bradley, Maine. They were the only two passengers in the car.

After the vehicle was pulled over, Niles refused to surrender to police and eventually shot himself in the head. Original reports indicated that the injury was fatal but there are conflicting reports that Niles survived and was in grave condition at Norwalk hospital.

Two Westport police officers were injured when they attempted to break the vehicle glass and seize the gun used by Niles. A pit bull in the truck bit one of the officers and was tased when it jumped out of the vehicle. Both officers were treated at Norwalk hospital.

Earlier Sunday, the body of Blake Michaud, 20, of Greenbush, Maine, was found shot to death in the home of Cates’ parents on 59 Highpoint Drive, Bradley, Maine. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

Shortly after the incident, detectives from the Maine State Police were on their way to Connecticut to interview Cates. The Maine State Police described Eric Niles as a ‘person of interest’ in the Michaud killing.

It is assumed that this is the incident which caused the State Police to close I-95 Southbound in Norwalk behind the Norwalk Costco, as we reported earlier.
