Kristen Cates and Blake Michaud (Michou)Sunday we reported on the massive I-95 shutdown and 8-mile backup which turned out to be caused by a man shooting himself in the head at the conclusion of a police chase.

The Stamford Advocate now has more details on this story.

It turns out that the man, Eric Niles of Alton, Maine, had showed up at his former girlfriend’s house (Kristen Cates, the driver) early Sunday and confronted Cates and her 20-year-old friend, Blake Michaud, in her bedroom. He then killed Michaud (some news outlets are now spelling it Mishou) and abducted Cates, forcing her to drive him out of state in a pickup Niles had stolen from his grandfather.

Cates had had an order of protection against Niles and does not face any charges.

Maine police are classifying the case as a murder-suicide and domestic violence.
