The 3g Apple iPhone Release Date is now June 9, predicts analysts who follow the company closely.
June 9 is likely the date Steve Jobs will give his keynote at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2008 In San Francisco, June 9-13.
Back on April 7th, we reported on the video of Walt Mossberg’s casual reveal of the 3g iPhone release date at the CTIA Wireless Association Conference. He mentioned 60 days from the the time of the video, which would have put the release at June 4 – but since the Apple WorldWide Developer Conference begins on June 9, that would be much more likely, as we know Steve Job’s penchant for dog and pony shows for new products during his keynotes.
Two days later we reported that that Mossberg had backpedaled on his mention of the 3g iPhone Release Date, stating that rather than having insider information, it was an observational guess based on declining iPhone inventories.
AT&T’s 3g high-speed cellular data network runs on HSDPA technology. Although HSDPA has theoretical speeds of over 7 Mbps, those speeds are rarely ever experienced in the real world. Sprint and Verizon’s EVDO Rev A network is half the speed of HSDPA in theory, but has relatively much better coverage than AT&T’s HSDPA.
Since the release of the original iPhone, users have complained about the slow performance of AT&T’s slower 2.5g EDGE network, which was selected by Apple for reasons of battery life.

I honestly don’t see 3g as a huge issue anyway – I very rarely use it as in London there is Wi Fi coverage almost everywhere. When I do use Edge and want to browse the web I use a service called Iphoneiquity which compresses any website and formats it for my Iphone – very quick and I just save the formatted site for viewing any time I am on Edge.

Its a big issue for a lot of people – one thing I learned working in the mobile space is that different users have different needs.
I guess if you are stationary when you use it and are near unprotected wifi all the time that works great, but thats rare in the states, even NYC most people use security on their wifi.
I usually need to check it quickly in a cab, or on a train, and while I am walking – in all of those cases wifi is frustrating is not impossible to use.
For me, the best value of having a 3G phone is being able to connect it to my laptop and surf at high speeds for free on the train for 2 hours a day (where wifi never works). That is extremely painful with EDGE.
