I had the pleasure of hearing R&B singer Alice Tan Ridley last night at 42nd St. I was running late for a friend’s birthday party, but I had to stop and hear her sing “Midnight Train To Georgia” – she is simply spectacular!
I shot a little video of her singing on my camera I was going to post, but then I saw this other great video of her singing ‘Lets Stay Together‘ with some seemingly random doughy middle-aged white guy (I can say that because I am one) – but, as it turns out, this guy can sing too – which flips out the crowd!
Updated – here is the video I shot:
OK and now I have added like four more – they are all great!
There isn’t one clip here that doesn’t make me smile a mile wide and want to get up and dance.

I saw Alice Tan Ridley perform in the NY subway in October 2009 — she has the most amazing voice you will ever hear… I could not believe she was singing in a subway…

I just found out that she is also the mother of ‘Precious’ star Gabourey Sidibe!

I had the pleasure of meeting Alice Tan Ridley and hear her singing in the subway while working in NYC one day about 15 years ago! I stopped to talk to her for a minute and she told me she had a cassette of her singing. I gave her some money and my address, and a few days later I received the cassette in the mail. I really enjoyed listening to it in the car back then.
I was thrilled to see her on GMA this morning and to learn that she was Gabby Sidebe’s mom because I remember meeting her in the subway all those years ago. How exciting! Does anyone know her schedule when she sings? I would love to hop on the train one day and hear her sing in person again.
Thanks!

Alice Tan Ridley is absolutely beautiful inside and out and boy do those great qualities shine! Alice is such a kind and thoughtful person, she lets me Sing with her sometimes even though it’s the spur of the moment and I’m not really prepared. She’s just so much fun and has the most powerful glorious voice I’ve ever heard in the subway. She belongs on the big stage and I am asking you to join me in trying to get her to do some acting in a musical where she can shine and use her singing potential so ALL of New York can be blessed with her voice. Alice is such a blessing and great friend to me as I have stage fright and she’s the only one that can give me the courage to really sing in front of people. I greatly appreciate her incredible voice, guidance, graciousness, encouragement and goodness. I feel honored to have her as my friend. She needs to get a part in a Broadway Musical or Movie so if you can send anyone her way in that respect, I’d greatly appreciate it. I love you Alice. You’re the pride of all the Subway Singers. You’re definitely #1 in my book!
