Sony, I am done with you – seriously, enough is enough.
It started back in the days of Betamax, your proprietary ways that created death paths for expensive consumer products. Whether Betamax was superior to VHS, I don’t care – you just wouldn’t play well with others in the process.
Then came that pen-sized digital media player I bought back in 2000 – the one I *thought* played MP3′s, but only after an agonizingly long conversion process to ATRAC, which really served no purpose whatsoever except to support yet another Sony format.
Then came my issue with the Playstation 2, whose 8 MB memory cards have always been overpriced – but whats more, they never came down in price after years of massive PS2 success. The other day I paid $25 for an 8 MB memory card – thats over $3 a MEGABYTE. Last week I bought an SDHC 8GB card for $30 – or $3.75 a GIGABYTE (1,024 Megabytes).
Sony PS2 Memory cost me 833X more than SDHC (which comes in a smaller form factor, works in thousands of devices, and is probably much higher-performance).
But today – well, today was the last straw.
Today was the day that I found out that my Playstation 3 has no backward PS2 compatibility – NONE.
For some reason, the 40 GB version of the PS3 is the only PS3 version without the ability to play PS2 games.
W T F?
I have never, ever heard of a video game console being released in multiple flavors, one of which lacks backward compatibility while the others have it. I knew the PS3 had backward compatibility, I just assumed it was in all of the models.
Ironically, the only reason I bought the PS3 was for the Blu-ray player. After having it for 3 days, I looked long and hard for a PS3 game I wanted to play which I didnt have for XBox 360. There really were none – zero, ziltch. Oh well, no biggie, at least I can get rid of my old PS2 box and play my old PS2 games on the PS3 until a good game comes along – oops, wait nope.

Actually very few of the PS3 consoles have backwards compatibility. The 20 GB and an 80 GB were the only ones that did have the ability to play Playstation 2 games. Ironically you can play most P S one titles in any console. Absolutely the stupidest thing a company has done.

Those are some of the worst replies I’ve ever seen. People need to do research before talking. You need the 60GB PS3 which has the emotion engine chip right inside of the system. It will play all the PS2 games you are going to want to play. They stopped making this about a year and a half ago so you’ll have to find it on ebay.
