Yesterday I wrote a very long rant about how many American voters perceive the Republican party as the best bet for increasing their personal wealth, and how that’s never been the case in my lifetime as a voter.
(conveniently, I started voting after the Carter and Reagan Administrations
– the contrast of those two being the irreplicable fable of modern conservative mythology)
There was a completely separate, original point I meant to make about people who say “I’m Voting With My Pocketbook” which I chose to save for this separate post.
Many New York Metro voters who vote conservative share little or no opinion with the current Republican party, but feel that by telling others they are voting Republican, they create the impression of personal achievement and wealth to their friends and associates.
I see this all the time – especially in New York City, where fashion has its own WEEK.
Ironically, the bigger failure a Republican administration is (see current) – even economic failure affecting wealth at all levels – the greater impact the statement has.
In other words, the mythology that Republicans raise wealth status for the employed at the expense of wasteful welfare spending persists – even after 12 years of Republican administrations seeing a decline in personal wealth and employment and/or rampant spending.
The subtext is: ‘I have achieved a status where I am not dependent nor interested in any consequence of government – I am so wealthy that tax cuts are my sole religion!”
I want to suggest something.
Like any good fashion, the same style gets old and must be throw out.
This fashion statement has been around since the Reagan Administration.
It’s like wearing a pair of acid-washed jeans with a ‘Frankie Says Relax’ sweatshirt on top.
Let’s bring political fashion into the 20th century.
“I’m voting Democrat” – try that one.
“Well”, you may ask, “how the hell am I supposed to create an illusion of wealth and success with that statement?”
Easy – back it up.
First, quote my previous post and anecdotally point out that both Bush’s torpedoed your personal wealth and Clinton propelled it (this makes you sound really smart, because besides being factual, its contrarian to populist belief)
Second, drop the hint that you have achieved such a level of personal success and wealth – that you are so secure in your own personal potential to earn a living – that you don’t fear the consequence of any administration financially.
You are post-wealth – you actually care about stuff like war, education, poverty, diplomacy, and the constitution – you care because you can afford to care.
Finally, infer that conservative voters are so financially and socially uneducated and insecure that they are willing to sell their vote for a tax cut in return for the four more years of complete and utter failure.
