To be perfectly fair, the CT elected officials responsible for the situation are no longer in office - administrations 10+ years ago should have approved the new cars and saw they were deployed when the current cars were already reaching end-of-life. At this point, CT and Metro-North have done about as much as they can do, and its now up to Kawasaki to get these trains online. New model railcar deployment, like a new jumbo jet, is a complex and vigilant safety process in which delays are predictable and that's where we are now, so I give Kawasaki a little slack as well, as they are not responsible for the firedrill either and, I'm sure, do not want the cars deployed until they can guarantee they are safe. Not to mention that they have had to try to test these trains every day under terrible weather conditions.

Winter of 2011 has really shown how delicate the train line is. The conductor announced the other day that 40% of the trains are out if service due to weather related repairs. Now we are on a reduced winter schedule so the trains are even more crowded. I have to get to grandcentral almost 20 minutes before departure to get a decent seat. Insane. My question is: What action can I take to have this situation changed? Seems like no elected officials are being held accountable.

Bottom line. I want to leave the region because my commute is so miserable. Its been 19 years for me. These cars are Porto potties. Metro North is like the filthy hobo. Torn clothes,Dirty face and a corsage in his lapel. Better pensions than fireman and cops and teachers. Better healthcare than the VA. There's our new cars. Period.

Chris - from what I understand, the overcrowding on NHL today has to do with lack of cars in service, rather than number of seats per car. The new cars will be augmenting the current fleet, not replacing all of them, so that there will be more cars available for overcrowded trains and/or create new relief trips.

The new cars which will arrive in the winter hold 20 people less per car, so these new cars will be more comfortable, but will do nothing to ease the congestion of the New Haven Line trains, there will be less seats, not more. If you have ever ridden on the M7 cars on the Harlem and Hudson lines, the new M8 cars are basically identical inside as far as layout. To the people who complain about the fare prices, I suggest driving your car every day, pay gas, tolls, and maintenance of your car, see which works out better. The passengers on the NH Line are equally as miserable as the conductors, probably mostly due to the poor conditions of the trains. Also, your ticket in no way guarantees you a seat, it only admits you passage on the train, there is no seat implied with the purchase of a ticket.
