[Update - looks like this is a known issue which may be limited to the 64-bit version]
The new Microsoft Office 2010 Beta is out, and is free to download from Microsoft’s web site.
Probably the biggest change is that Office finally comes in a 64-bit version. This is the version I tried out as I run Windows 7 64-bit. It also touts improved web, sharing, and mobile support and seems to have some interesting social networking features in Outlook.
So far the only issue I have had with it is that it breaks MobileMe<->Outlook syncing, which I almost saw coming. From peeking around the net, it seems that some people may have been able to get a manual sync to work, but not automatic. I was unable to do either.
The error, which is generated by Microsoft Office Outlook, reads:
“Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client”
I double-checked to make sure I had Outlook selected as my default mail client and rebooted the system to make sure it took, but still got this error message.
The question is – is this a beta bug or is Microsoft doing to Apple what Apple did to Palm Pre iTunes syncing?
I think the answer is a little of both. This is a bug either Microsoft or Apple will be able to fix in the future, as Outlook’s messaging interface is well-established. I think Microsoft enjoys this error in the beta however, to create some scare in Outlook customers (esp. Enterprise) that MobileMe syncing isn’t guaranteed, so don’t go there.

Not just an apple thing. it also is broken with WM6.5 synching too. I get the exact same error message. No conspiracy here. Move along.

Ok now it works
Same issue here win64 office 2010 impossible to make it work. Issue also with sharepoint workspace which can not connect to a sharepoint server warf.
So I guess it is not a conspiracy it is just bad work but they are only at the B2 stage let’s wait the RC and RTM

Manual sync is not working for me either (Office 2010 32-bit OR 64 bit).

Hi All,
I got windows 7 64 bit and office 2010 beta 64 bit and I tried to sync my outlook with iphone and all my contacts are deleted. This is catastrophic for me. Can someone please advise how do I get those contacts back. I have all contacts in outlook but as I try to sync it, it gives me this error “Either there is no default client….”. Please advice or email me to abhi426@yahoo.com

I think I’ve found a temporary workaround for the problem…
If you are running Windows 7 64-bit ultimate install XP mode. This may work with other emulation software as well but I haven’t tried it.
After installing XP, next install iTunes and Office 2007 or Office 2010 beta. You can use the same .pst file as the one you have running on Win 7 64-bit (note: you cannot have 2 copies of Office running simultaneously).
Viola, iTunes will be able to sync to Office on XP.
Good luck.

FYI same problem happens with Outlook 2010 64 bit RTM version posted on TechNet yesterday.

FYIm this does the same thing in the Office 2010 x64 release. I have the open license version of Office Pro Plus, and ANY application that tries to connect to Outlook (Quickbooks mailing invoices, Acrobat reader / writer ‘mail file to’). None of it works. Microsoft didn’t consider this? That people will still have 32 bit apps that want to use some kind of mail dde or whatever?!?!

I’ll bet its fixed in release – keep in mind its still a beta (and so far, a pretty great one otherwise!)

i have the technet RTM and it gives me the error on the 64 bit version of office. i dont need the sync that bad but its a tad annoying since it backed up my iphone’s notes into outlook. thats the only thing i sync into outlook. my contacts are keep in gmail.

I dumped both MobileMe and Entourage/Outlook, I realized that they were not doing anything for me but making my life complex.
I am 100% on Gmail/Google Calendar now, and wish I had done it a long time ago.

what’s the best alternative way to sync Outlook 64 with Winmo 6.5?

I am running Windows 7 home professional x 64 and Office 2010 professional and have had the “either there is no mail client…” error now for months. Can’t sync win mobile phone. Tried everything, including 4 hours with Microsoft techie and no positive outcome. Run into problems uninstalling Office x 64 and installing Office x32 as Outlook totally hangs. SURELY there is a fix for this ongoing problem out there!?
