MTA worker Juan de los Santos, 43, anonymously exposed waste in the agency last year by identifying labor practices that had track workers working only 2-4 hours a DAY during 8-hr work shifts.
Now del los Santos has identified himself and says that he was pushed onto the subway tracks, possibly by another worker in retaliation.
This is a serious problem that strikes at the heart of MTA’s financial mismanagement, as labor is MTA’s #1 cost. Earlier this year, suspicion was cast upon MTA management when law firm Proskauer Rose said they could not longer represent MTA and inferred the organization had become ‘too friendly with labor’.
The Daily News reported that secret arbitration took place between NYC Transit President Howard Roberts and labor without inviting Proskauer lawyers or the MTA’s director of labor relations.
The outcome of those talks resulted in a surprisingly generous contract for the labor workers, including an 11% pay raise over 3 years and concessions on health benefits.
